About Us

The Convent of Mercy in Bermondsey has been home to the Sisters of Mercy since 1839. The community traces its origins to Catherine McAuley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin in 1831 in response to the needs of the poor and the sick. Shaped by the Mercy charism of compassion and service, the Sisters established ministries of education, healthcare, and social care in Bermondsey and in beyond.

Today, the Sisters continue to live and worship at the convent while caring for the Heritage Centre, library, and archives, which preserve the story of their Catholic faith and mission. Through guided tours and research visits, guests are invited to explore this history and to encounter a living Mercy community that remains rooted in Bermondsey.
